Core 52

Hey there, friends!

At different times, we all wonder where we came from, why we’re here, and where our lives are headed. At Greenwood Christian, we believe Jesus is the key to all those questions. He created us to live in relationship with Him and with others, and He loves us so much that He gave His life to save us from the sins that would otherwise keep us apart. Our world desperately needs Jesus, so we want to lead as many people as we can to follow Him. As a church, we’re committed to:

  1. Knowing Jesus. The Bible isn’t just a book of strange names and moral instructions; it’s the story of Jesus. We want to know Jesus, and be able to talk to others about Him, so we want to know scripture. And not only that, we’re committed to …
  2. Obeying Jesus. Following Jesus isn’t just knowing about Him; it means putting His teachings into action. James 1:22 says, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”

That’s why we’re going to devote 2021 to a study called Core 52. This book was written by Mark Moore, who was one of my undergrad professors at Ozark Christian College, and is now a teaching pastor in Phoenix. Mark loves Jesus, and he’s a brilliant Bible scholar and teacher. I read Core 52 myself earlier this year, and I’m looking forward to experiencing it together. Each Sunday, we’ll teach from a biblical text, and then throughout the following week, Core 52 will help us to internalize, remember, and put God’s Word into practice.

Here’s how you can join us on this journey:

  1. Pick up a copy of the Core 52. You can do that in the Commons starting November 29. You’re also welcome to order or download the book on your own from Amazon or Christianbook.com. Ideally, we want everyone in our church 6th grade and older to have a copy. If money is tight, consider this book our gift to you. And if you’re able and willing to donate $20 (or whatever you can afford), you’ll help us defray the cost of providing these books to as many people as possible.
  2. In addition to the Core 52 book, we’ll make available:
    1. A bookmark to help you stay on track. We’re changing up the book’s sequence in order to align our messages with Easter and Christmas, so this bookmark will help you to track your progress throughout the series.
    2. Scripture memory cards. Keeping these on your desk, mirror, dashboard, or dinner table, and reviewing them as we go will help you in memorizing scripture.
  3. Unlike many devotionals, Core 52 will challenge us to do more than just read. Each week, we’ll have five simple assignments to tackle: a short essay to read; scriptures to reflect on and memorize; and an action to take. Most of these steps will take 15 minutes or less. If you’re an over-achiever type, you’ll even find weekly suggestions for additional reading.

We’ll continue each Sunday in 2021 to preach directly from the Bible, just as we always have. I’m excited about the way Core 52 will help us to integrate scripture into our lives, and I hope you’ll join us for this series!

-Matt Giebler, Senior Minister
